DULUTH, Minn. – The Duluth Fire Department is battling a fire that broke out Wednesday night at a building housing four apartments and a business in the Central Hillside neighborhood.

Firefighters were dispatched to a fire at the Lake Superior Medical Equipment building at 5:37 p.m.

There are four apartments above the business which have all been evacuated.

So far, no injuries have been reported.

The building is located at 522 East Fourth Street between Dunbar Floral & Gifts and Uncle Loui’s Cafe.

A city spokesperson said the wind exacerbated the flames and the senior fire department brought in their ladder truck to help attack the fire from above.

The 148th Fighter Wing also arrived on scene shortly after 7:30 p.m. with an aerial trailer to fill the air canisters of the firefighters’ breathing apparatus.

Gas and electricity were cut for the whole block.

As of 9 p.m. Wednesday, the city said the fire was limited to a single building, but smoke and possibly water damaged the other two.

While the area is locked down, the city is urging people to stay away from the area as the air is not breathable and firefighters need space to do their jobs.

They also want to strongly remind drivers never to drive over garden hoses, which can damage them instantly.

Those affected by tonight’s fire will be offered temporary accommodation.

It is not known at this stage what started the fire.

This is a developing story. Stay with FOX21 for updates.
