Finding accommodation is not easy for nurses in the region who are working because of the pandemic.
COLUMBIA, SC – Hospitals in the area are struggling with staff shortages due to the coronavirus.
As a result, many hospitals use itinerant nurses.
Mobile nurses are registered nurses who work short-term in hospitals, clinics and other health care settings.
Many of these short-term nurses struggle to find short-term rentals and housing in the Columbia area.
A man from the Midlands tries to do his part.
George Park, rents part of his house to itinerant nurses, working because of the pandemic, in local hospitals.
âI provide them with a place to stay and they usually look for a place to sleep because they work hard,â Park said.

Sheri Pittman, a registered nurse from North Carolina, says, âTravel nurses are needed because the hospitals are very crowded.
She went on to say, “There are a lot of people who don’t want to hire nurses because they don’t know if we have COVID.”
This is where George Park’s guest bedroom comes in. He said: “Had this finished room above the garage that was hardly ever used and I was thinking of doing an Airbnb, someone said you were thinking of traveling nurses.”
He said once COVID hit he didn’t want people coming and going, he wanted long term stays, âWithin 48 hours I had a young man from Idaho who m ‘asked if he could stay here. “

He says his property is listed on Furnished Finders, that guests have their own bedroom and living space, bathroom, access to kitchen, WIFI and can use the pool.
Pittman is the current tenant, she says the pandemic has made it very difficult to find short-term housing. âIt can take time because there are a lot of nurses looking for accommodation.
“Lots of housing, if you don’t jump on it, let’s go”, she continued,
“Airbnb, a lot of people use it, not me because there are a lot of fees attached to it.”
As for Park, he says, he just wants to help those who have dedicated their lives to helping others.
“These are people helping us and they need a comfortable and safe place to stay … It gives me pleasure to be able to provide them with something they need.” The rent for the space is $ 750 / month.
George says he has housed three nurses since he started renting his place this year.
