Houston police said no officers were injured in the shooting.

HOUSTON – A suspect was fatally shot by an officer in the Galleria area on Wednesday, according to Houston police.

It happened in an apartment complex located in the 2600 block of Lazy Hollow Drive near Westheimer Road at 18h

According to the Houston Police Departmentmultiple agencies were working as part of a violent task force monitoring a suspect they believe was wanted for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon warrant.

Investigators said they got information that the suspect might be in the apartment complex, and while watching said they saw the suspect leaving the complex on foot and walking to the parking lot.

HPD said when the suspect was seen returning to the compound, officers thought it was a good opportunity to take him into custody.

Authorities said when officers approached, the suspect pulled out a gun and pointed it at an HPD sergeant. The sergeant opened fire, striking the suspect. Authorities said multiple shots were fired, but it’s unclear if the suspect fired.

When the suspect fell, officers provided first aid, but the suspect died at the scene. A gun was found next to his body.

No officers were injured in the shooting and no other officers fired, the HPD said.

Officials said the sergeant who fired is a 13-year veteran with HPD. He will be placed on administrative duty while the shooting is investigated.

The identity of the suspect has not been released. Additionally, details of the warrant he was wanted for were not disclosed.

HPD said body camera video of the shooting would be released within 30 days and they said there were at least two witnesses at the scene.
