KILLEEN, Texas – A fire at an overnight apartment in Killeen sent two people, including a child, to the hospital after escaping through a window and jumping from the second floor.

“It’s horrible, it’s horrible to know that your child may be burning alive,” said Patricia Butler, a resident who said the fire started in her daughter’s unit. “I heard her scream and I know she was burned and done what she had to do, but now I’m here and waiting to find out what’s going on here. “

Fire crews arrived at the scene just before 4 a.m. and Killeen Police Chief James Kubinski said he was proud of his team in preventing the blaze from spreading to other units.

“The first reports were that we had flames throughout the unit and when we arrived,” Chief Kubinski said, adding that they had dispatched four fire trucks, a ladder truck and heavy relief supplies to the scene as well. only a few ambulances. “We found intense fire conditions on the second floor from a centered unit.”

Chief Kubinskli said the extent of the damage was not known to neighboring units, but said most of the damage was to the central unit which caught fire. He also said that the two victims transported are alert but have not been able to update their status.
