Shots were fired Friday evening during another shooting in the Crestmont district. This latest incident marks the sixth report of gunfire in the region since early July.
At 9:18 p.m., Bloomington Police responded to reports of gunfire in the Crestmont Park area. The alleged shooter was described by witnesses as a black man of around 5’8 “wearing a red hoodie and blue jeans, according to police reports filed on the case.
Some witnesses reported seeing the man holding a black handgun. Witnesses told police he was screaming, as if arguing with someone, and then heard two gunshots.
Witnesses say they saw the man flee after the shots. None of the witnesses could identify the man, although one noted that they had seen him in the area before.
No one was hurt.
Police later discovered that a bullet had gone through a window at West Illinois Court, which is near the park’s playground. The bullet lodged in a wall, police said.
No other damage was reported. Police recovered a box.
A series of shooting incidents
This is the latest of several shooting incidents fired at Crestmont.
In early July, gunshots in the Crestmont Park playground injured several people. Bullets were fired from passing cars at around 7 p.m. on July 2 and 8 and hit people sitting at tables near the swing.
On July 2, someone fired eight .223 caliber bullets at the playground. Six days later, seven 9mm bullets were fired at the playground, where two children were playing.

At 11:40 p.m. on July 21, police responded to the shots and found six 9mm shell casings and two .40 caliber shell casings near the sidewalk outside a Union @ Crestmont apartment building at 1120 N. Crescent Road. No one was hurt. A bullet hit an electrical box in front of the building. Locals said they did not see what had happened but heard men arguing just before the shots were fired.
At 1 a.m. on July 24, gunfire was reported by a private security guard at the Union @ Crescent apartment complex. MSI’s security guard said he saw a dark-colored car drive through the new apartment complex adjacent to Crestmont at 1 a.m. on July 24. He saw the driver’s left arm come out of the driver’s side window, then saw a muzzle flash as a gunshot was fired.

Later, a 77-year-old woman who lived behind the apartment complex reported a bullet hole in a wall near her kitchen, believed to be due to the shooting.
At 11:08 p.m. on July 29, residents said they heard eight to ten gunshots outside the same Union @ Crescent building. Police found eight cartridge cases on the road. An unidentified vehicle left the area shortly after the gunfire.
