INDIANAPOLIS — “Police! The apartment is on fire, you must evacuate now!”

This is part of the audio captured by cameras worn by IMPD during the harrowing moments when officers rushed into a burning building to help residents evacuate safely.

Police were at an apartment complex near 46th and High School Road last week when they heard screams and smoke detectors going off.

They quickly realized that a unit was on fire. Luckily no one was inside.

Officers rushed neighbors out and used fire extinguishers to bring the fire under control.

One of those officers told 13News he was grateful he was in the right place at the right time.

“There is no doubt. There is work to be done and all four of us went for it, no questions asked. We did it,” said Brian Ramey of IMPD.

Several of the officers required treatment after inhaling smoke, but returned to work the same evening.
