COLUMBIA, MO (KMIZ)

Columbia police are scrambling to find out more after a shooting in eastern Columbia on Saturday.

The department says it identified a potential suspect and brought him in for questioning around 1:30 a.m. Sunday.

Officers say they responded to the 200 block of Old Route 63 around 10:30 p.m. Saturday for gunshots. Officers were still on the scene at midnight.

Police blocked off parts of Walnut Street and the entrance to the Lakewood Apartments with crime scene tape and patrol cruisers.

At the scene, ABC 17 News saw first responders, multiple CPD patrol cruisers, officers and the crime scene investigation van.

Several people at the apartment complex told ABC 17 they heard a woman screaming shortly before officers arrived. A resident also told news crews that this type of police activity is unusual for the area.

The CPD says a man was shot and suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. Officers said the victim was transported to a local hospital.

Columbia Police Lt. Scott Alpers said the department could use help from the community.

“They can call crime stoppers where they can remain anonymous. They can also call 311 to ask to speak to an officer about the incident,” Alpers said.

Columbia police say there is no threat to the community. We will provide updates as we learn more.
