Million-dollar apartments near downtown New Plymouth drew “five or six serious evenings” in their first week on the market – although work to build them will not begin until later this year. year.

DBB Oasis Ltd is behind plans for a six-apartment block on the corner of Dawson and Vivian streets, and hopes to complete it by mid-2023.

The Dawson Apartments will feature a 10-vehicle basement garage, two three-bedroom apartments at street level, two three-bedroom apartments above and two penthouses, one with three bedrooms and one with two bedrooms.

There will be a central lift to all floors and each apartment will have a balcony.

In addition, both penthouses will have rooftop gardens, as will a single storey commercial office that will be integrated into the building along Vivian Street.

Company director Leo Baas said the project had been planned for almost seven years and he hoped to start construction in late November.

Baas said he was not surprised by the interest shown.

The site is almost in the central business district and within walking distance of shops, cafes, parks and the coastal promenade, he said.

Two old, aging rental homes, both in disrepair, will be demolished to make way for development.

Hamish Crimp, of the Heritage Taranaki preservation group, said he was in favor of intensifying land use in New Plymouth for housing, but did not believe it should come at the expense of l ‘history of the city.

Crimp, who is Heritage Taranaki’s built heritage specialist, said 77 Vivian Street was a good example of buildings erected after WWI, many of which had been lost in recent years.

“The bungalow is one of a cluster of different style boutique houses that form part of a cohesive streetscape – these groupings of boutique houses are now rare in New Plymouth.

“Our predominantly wood buildings retain large amounts of carbon, while most new construction releases large amounts of carbon into the atmosphere.

“With the current climate crisis, we should do everything possible to conserve and reuse our old buildings. “

Heritage Taranaki has asked New Plymouth District Council to program other buildings as heritage items to ensure they remain for future generations.

Meanwhile, as land prices continue to rise, apartments are becoming increasingly popular in New Plymouth.

In April, an independent commissioner approved a six-story office and apartment building in a parking lot at the corner of Brougham and Powderham streets.

The building, proposed by Kevin Doody of KD Holdings, will have underground parking, five floors of office space and a three-bedroom apartment at the top.

And Chris Bell Construction & Project Management Ltd is behind three apartments taking shape at 150 Molesworth St.
