MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) – Tensions are running high among residents of Meridian Manor apartments.

People there say the property’s elevator has been out of order for about a month, forcing them to use the stairs, which leaves some elderly tenants in dire straits.

Meridian Manor has three stories, and some residents struggle to get their laundry to the restroom, run errands up the stairs, and run their usual errands without the elevator.

“I’m on the third floor and I already have leg problems. I can barely walk up and down those stairs. I am on the third floor. God knows my doctor tells me that every day; I have to be careful going down those steps. It doesn’t look like they’re trying to do anything to help us,” said Meridian Manor resident Gennie Rush.

A resident says he is not only concerned about his safety, but also about the safety of others.

“It’s hard for everyone. There are people upstairs who can’t come down because they’re sick. It’s right in front of my friend’s house and the lady can’t come down and if that place catches fire how are we going to get her down,’ said Johnny Dunnign, another resident of Meridian Manor.

Dorothy Moore, Meridian Manor’s property manager, said she reported the issue but is still waiting for the issue to be resolved.

“You have to do something, you have to do something because it’s a costume. You know, they pay their money. They pay rent once a month. It’s awful. It’s not fair to them. Something has to be done,” Moore said.

Meridian Manor is sponsored by Yazoo County Fair and Civic League, Inc. of Yazoo City, Mississippi.

News 11 is working to reach out to the agency for further comment.
