WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) – Residents of a derby apartment building are shocked after what police suspect was some sort of domestic violence issue that left two people dead.

“I’ve lived here since it opened a few years ago. And I’ve never experienced anything like it,” said Gary Kinard, who lives at Trails of Derby Apartments.

Kinard said he was stunned when he heard what happened in the unit near his.

“I just think, you know, being locked up for so long that people just get irritated with each other. And any little thing can trigger that,” Kinard said.

Derby Police Chief Robert Lee said officers responded to the call just after 4pm on Friday afternoon to reports of a shooting.

When they arrived, they found a woman who had been shot. She was rushed to hospital for treatment, but died of her injuries.

Shortly after, officers found the man they believed to be involved at a nearby golf course. He ran away.

“He ran on foot. And it looks like he self-inflicted a gunshot wound, which was also fatal on the golf course,” Lee said.

Lee said he’s still early in the investigation, but it looks like it’s likely a domestic violence-type situation.

“We’re trying to figure out the dynamics of that relationship, which witnesses may have heard this stuff, and then we’ll have much better answers over time,” Lee said.

He said that at this time investigators are doing everything they can to process both scenes and gather enough evidence to find out what happened…

As for Kinard, he said his heart goes out to the family and friends of the two who died.

“The family that just lost two young people for nothing. You know, it’s not worth it. You know, walk away. You know, something’s bothering you. Let it go,” Kinard said.
