The Sanford Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting that took place Thursday night at the Apartments in Autumn Oaks.
Major Vincent Frazier said police responded just after 10 p.m. in Scarlet Oak Lane with reference to a subject who had been shot and discovered the victim, Chandler Tyree Cotton, 19, outside in the walkway of the building suffering from a gunshot wound.
According to police, Cotton was taken to the emergency room at Central Carolina Hospital by emergency personnel. He was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
The case is currently under investigation and no further information is available, according to Frazier.
A resident of the apartment complex, who wished to remain anonymous, said all residents of the building left after hearing the gunshots.
“I went down and he was lying there – he was still alive,” the resident said. “He was having trouble breathing.
The resident heard four gunshots and said the police came and searched the area of the crime scene but could not locate the shooter. Residents said several people who saw the gunman said it was a man wearing a gray sweater.

In 2018, the apartments were the scene of another fatal shooting.
Imani Shabriyah Olivier, 20, was found dead in a car outside Central Carolina Hospital in August 2018. Sanford Police have determined that Olivier was shot dead at the Autumn Oaks Apartments. Three people were charged in the incident.
