WARREN – Township planning council is due to hear a proposal to build an affordable housing community for 36 adults with special needs on Mountain Avenue.

Bergen County United Way / Madeline Partners LLC’s plan, called Cawley Crossing, is set for a 7:30 p.m. hearing on August 23 at the township municipal building.

The plan calls for 30 residential units with 36 rooms on the 10-acre property which is bounded on the south by Interstate 78 and on the north by Mountain Avenue west of Cory’s Brook Road. Across Mountain Avenue is the Wagner Farm Arboretum.

The 30 residences – 24 one-bedroom units and six two-bedroom units – would be spread across six one-story buildings. The proposal also includes a two-story community building with a walkout basement, a sewage treatment building and a well.

The Madeline Corporation and Bergen County United Way, two nonprofit organizations, formed a partnership in 2004 to address the need to provide safe and affordable housing for families, seniors and people with special needs.

One of the partnership’s projects in central Jersey was Dina’s Dwellings, a 9,000-square-foot addition to New Brunswick’s first 200-year-old Reformed Church, which offered 10 self-catering apartments for women and their children who have survived domestic violence.

Cawley Crossing is part of the township’s affordable housing plan which includes Woods at Warren, 80 apartments on Lindburgh Avenue; Toll Brothers, 25 apartments on Mt. Bethel Road; K. Hovnanian, 48 apartments on Emerson Lane and Hillcrest Road; Hillcrest Crossing, 44 apartments on Hillcrest Road; Chase, 68 apartments and seven rental townhouses, at the corner of King George Road and Mountain Avenue; Flag Plaza, 16 apartments at Mountain Boulevard and Mt. Bethel Road and 40 Mountain Boulevard, eight apartments.
