The Chicago Police Oversight Agency released video showing an officer on leave shooting a man who was trying to break into his home in Albany Park.

Videos released Monday by the Police Civil Accountability Office show a man entering the building at around 12:30 a.m. on March 31 in block 3100 of West Belle Plaine and lingering in the lobby before approaching the front door. entry of the officer.

The man, later identified by police as Jose Mendoza, 32, is said to have started playing with the front door handle. After hearing the noise, the officer opened the door, peeked outside, and saw Mendoza crouching nearby.

He told Mendoza to leave, but he refused and tried to enter the house, Deputy State Attorney James Murphy said at a subsequent hearing for Mendoza. It was then that the officer fired his gun once, hitting Mendoza across his cheek.

Mendoza – which had multiple arrest warrants and a pending DUI case in Rolling Meadows – faces charges of burglary, home invasion and trespassing.
